The helmet's purpose is to protect the head and face from balls and errant sticks.
Fit: The mask should not wobble on your head when you turn it, but it should also not press too tightly on your temples.
Adjustability: Check that the elastic straps on the back plate are sturdy and adjustable.
Visibility: The grid should provide the most unobstructed view possible. IFF approval is essential for official games.
Knees are subjected to the most strain, so it's worth investing in their protection.
Model: There are long (extending to the thigh) and short models to choose from. Long ones often stay in place better, but short ones can feel more agile.
Padding: Gel padding (such as D3O or similar smart materials) absorbs impacts better than traditional foam, which compresses over time.
Stability: Good Velcro straps and silicone edges prevent the protectors from sliding down during play.
These directly affect how much "coverage" you have and how easily you slide.
Sliding properties: The material of the knee areas of the pants must be durable and very slippery (often Cordura or similar) to allow for effortless lateral movements.
Padding vs. Chest Protector: Many modern jerseys are lightly padded. If shots come in hard, you will need a separate chest protector under your jersey. Make sure the jersey is large enough for a possible protector.
Pants Waist: Choose a model with an adjustable belt or suspenders to prevent the pants from falling down during a save.
Gloves: Grip and feel are paramount. The palm material (often latex or silicone) should "stick" the ball to the hand. The glove must be snug: too large a glove will result in a loss of ball feel.
Shoes: Goalkeeper shoes differ from those of outfield players. They have a smoother sole and often a reinforced toe/sides to facilitate sliding and protect the toes.
Groin protector: An absolute must-have. There are specific models for goalies that are slightly wider and offer better protection.
Neck guard: A ball or stick to the throat is a dangerous situation. A soft neck protector or a visor attached to the helmet is cheap life insurance.
Maintenance: Remember that equipment (especially knee pads and helmet padding) wears out. Always dry your equipment outside the bag after each practice to extend its lifespan.
